brenda-33cja-logo1Co-Creating a Culturally Proficient Workplace
Brenda CampbellJones, Ph.D, President, CampbellJones & Associates, Elliott City, MD

Cultural proficiency is a mindset employing an inside-out approach to change that will lead us to esteem the cultures of others, as well as our own. Language is the medium in human organizations that allows us to describe and re-describe our world. It is through purposeful conversations that educators unleash the potential to create an educational environment that mitigates or eliminates the lingering power distortions fostered by race, class, and culture. Plan to reflect on and apply the tools of cultural proficiency to shift conversations from confusion, malaise, and blame to collective responsibility for leading profound transformational change in schools.

Brenda CampbellJones,Ph.D, is president of CampbellJones & Associates. Dr. CampbellJones provides professional learning and technical assistance to school districts throughout the United States and Canada. She has served as a teacher, an elementary principal, and an award winning middle school principal, an area superintendent, and college professor. Through the lens of Cultural Proficiency, she coaches and facilitates the change process in school districts that are making systemic changes for academic and social achievement. She is the co-author of Journey of Sprit Walk of Faith: Our Relationship with God and one of Corwin’s bestselling books, The Cultural Proficiency Journey: Moving Beyond Ethical Barriers Toward Profound School Change. http://campbelljones.org

Moveable Game Jams: Students Designing Games
Matthew Farber, Ed.D., Teacher and Author, Denville, NJ

Game jams have been growing in popularity across school campuses and in out-of-school programs. In a game jam, student teams are challenged to design a game in a short period of time. In essence, game jams are a game about making a game!

During the 2016-17 school year, Dr. Farber worked with a coalition of Hive New York City partners to develop, host, and document five day long “Moveable Game Jams,” which took place at different venues in four boroughs. Middle and high school students created digital games and non-digital games about real-world issues impacting their communities. At the game jams, students learned how to tackle broad, open-ended problems, while applying 21st-Century skills, like systems thinking, design thinking, user empathy, and collaboration.

This master class is modeled on the Moveable Game Jams. Participants will have an opportunity to design games, and experience a real game jam! Dr. Farber, author of Gamify Your Classroom: A Field Guide to Game-Based Learning, will also share the developed curriculum resources so you can host your own out-of-school game jam!

Matthew Farber, Ed.D. is a social studies teacher at Valleyview Middle School in Denville, New Jersey. He is also an adjunct instructor, an Edutopia blogger, and co-host on Ed Got Game on the BAM Radio Network. Dr. Farber was a recipient of a Woodrow Wilson HistoryQuest Fellowship, and is a Certified BrainPOP Educator and a PBS Local Digital Innovator. http://matthewfarber.com

aaren-mckinneyHow to Motivate, Inform & Inspire Your Team through Storytelling
Aaren McKinney, Client Associate/Performance Consultant, Dale Carnegie, San Diego, CA

Whether you are an emerging leader or an experienced executive, storytelling is an essential communications tool to inspire and motivate your listeners. Professionals that master the art of storytelling can leave a lasting impression on their audience, influence others and engage their colleagues.

With today’s technology the amount of time that you have to capture the attention of your audience is dwindling. As soon as you utter your first word the countdown begins. Individuals who use a compelling story are the ones that win over and engage their audiences. Stories are effectively used to present new ideas, to deliver technical information, to communicate company policies, to motivate employees and so much more.

Learn how you can leverage the power of storytelling to attract and hold attention while delivering key messages and takeaways that will prompt action.
